Dr. AP Ranga Rao is credited with first conceptualizing 108 ambulance services in India, having spent 10 years working with the National Health Service (NHS) in Britain learning about emergency systems.
GVK EMRI is an Indian not-for-profit organisation and the largest ambulatory care provider in the world, providing emergency medical services coverage to 800 million people across India and Sri Lanka.
What was the emergency number before 108?
The existing independent emergency services (100 for police, 101 for fire and 102 for ambulance) worked erratically and independently of each other.
The Dial-108 service is available in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu,Telangana, Uttarakhand, Sikkim,Jharkhand,and Uttar Pradesh, and two union territories; Puducherry, Daman and Diu, and Chandigarh.
Initially, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project had partnered with selected NGOs in 15 districts to provide ambulance services. Due to various difficulties faced in running the operations, it was decided to partner with an experienced organization
How to call ambulance service?
It could be either a medical emergency, a fire emergency, or a crime being committed. The number 108 is a toll-free number and can be dialed from any phone, be it a mobile phone or a landline, at the time of an emergency, without any prefix or suffix.
The entire service is free for any citizen.
24x7 ambulance Service
The 108 Emergency Ambulance Service is a 24x7 service, which anyone can avail by dialling the number 108 on their phone during the case of any emergency. Help reaches the person within 20 minutes.
Dial-108, or one-zero-eight is a free telephone number for emergency services in India.
On an iOS device, "Hey Siri, 108" command to Siri will place an emergency call.
